Würzburger Ratskeller
Würzburger Ratskeller lies beneath the Grafeneckart, a historic town-hall complex in Würzburg. Its entrance uses a portal installed in 1695. At the centre, the Hof zum Grafeneckart preserves a tower and hall dating from around 1200. It is the only surviving secular building from the Staufer period.
A beer tavern and town clerk’s house stood northwest of the town-hall core from 1577. The city controlled beer service there until 1806. From 1664, the tavern served beer from the prince-bishop’s brewery. The present cellar opened in 1918 inside rooms once used for salt storage. An air raid destroyed it in 1945, and rebuilding brought its reopening in 1973.
Renovation in 2011 renewed the lighting, ventilation, sanitation, electrical systems, and kitchen technology. One old custom remains vivid: council members shared a full cup during meetings.
