Historische Senfmühle

Historische Senfmühle is a working mustard mill in Germany, with thick stone walls, narrow windows, and old machinery inside. Several generations of one family have continued its craft, producing mustard by hand since the late nineteenth century. Basalt lava stones slowly grind the seeds in a cold process that preserves their essential oils.

Water once powered the mill, while an old mechanical transmission still keeps its traditional workings in motion. Tools and filling vessels gather around the grinding stones, alongside shelves of golden and brown mustard jars. Moutarde de Montjoie comes in mild, spicy, and fruity varieties made on site. In the adjoining restored building, Schnabuleum serves regional dishes refined with mustard from the mill.

A faint spicy scent accompanies the soft hum of machinery, while jars display mustard in several shades. The wheelchair-accessible site brings production and regional cooking together in a living food tradition.
