Felsenkeller Brauerei

In Germany, Felsenkeller Brauerei preserves a nineteenth-century brewery complex with dark stone walls and deep cellars. Slate rock surrounds the rooms, giving the former industrial site a cool, earthy atmosphere. The brewhouse, fermentation cellars, storage spaces, and cooper’s workshop remain central to the complex.

Brewing began here in the early nineteenth century and continued for more than 150 years. A turbine and later a steam engine supplied power as the operation expanded. Felsquell and Zwickelbier came from these rooms, including the unfiltered dark lager. Brewing ended in the 1990s, leaving equipment and documents that preserve the craft and its working life.

The cellars were blasted and hewn into the rock to maintain about eight degrees Celsius. Old tools, bottles, and photographs connect the machinery with the people who once worked underground. Thick walls, stone floors, and the quiet drip of water give the place its lasting character.
