Borkenküche

Borkenküche stands in the Neuer Garten in Potsdam as a single-storey, round building beside the Muschelgrotte. Oak bark covers its walls, a thatched roof caps the structure, and an iron-sheet tree trunk with an owl forms the chimney.

Friedrich Wilhelm II commissioned the kitchen in 1796 to supply food and drinks for royal dinners near the Jungfernsee. Friedrich Wilhelm III and Luise soon preferred other locations, so the kitchen served for only a short period before falling into disrepair. The Potsdam Palace Administration dismantled it in 1958, after the Russian Army had used the Neuer Garten as a leisure park.

Research for its reconstruction began in 2007, followed by rebuilding from August 2010. Weather-resistant oak bark completed the restoration in 2012, preserving the building’s distinctive woodland appearance.
