Disgusting Food Museum
The Disgusting Food Museum in Sweden places you in a bright, clinical gallery filled with challenging food smells. Jars, display cases and tasting stations shape the visit. You can sniff unusual specimens, handle a raw bull’s penis prop, and confront insect snacks behind glass. A barf bag and bingo card greet you at the entrance.
Samuel West and Andreas Ahrens created the museum to examine how culture and biology shape disgust. Its exhibits show how communities transformed scarce or poisonous resources into food. Other displays explore hazardous dishes that require precise preparation and specialised knowledge. Stories about cuy, fermented rice wine and maggot-ridden cheese connect survival with tradition.
The tasting bar offers changing samples for visitors willing to test their palates. Surströmming, durian and casu marzu reveal how one culture’s delicacy can become another’s challenge.
