Carolus-Brunnen
Le Carolus-Brunnen est une œuvre d’art située à Wendelsplatz, dans le quartier de Sachsenhausen à Francfort. Fritz Boehle a créé cette statue en représentant Charlemagne. Conçue d’abord comme une fontaine monumentale pour le nouveau pont sur le Main, elle n’a finalement pas été réalisée ainsi. Un modèle en plastiline a cependant subsisté après l’abandon du projet. La brasserie Binding a fait couler la statue en fer en 1965, puis l’a installée devant son bâtiment administratif. La sculpture a rejoint Wendelsplatz en 1976. Son bassin ne reçoit plus d’eau, mais la terre qui le remplit permet aux plantes de pousser autour de la figure. Le monument reste accessible aux personnes en fauteuil roulant. Le nom Carolus a aussi servi d’étiquette à une bière forte de la brasserie Binding, reliant l’œuvre à l’histoire locale. Boehle a étudié à l’Institut Städel de Francfort, où les œuvres d’Albrecht Dürer ont influencé sa formation artistique. Sa pratique associait la peinture, le dessin et la sculpture, avec une attention particulière aux personnes, aux animaux et aux chevaux.
