Carolus-Brunnen
The Carolus-Brunnen stands at Wendelsplatz in Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt, as a wheelchair-accessible work of public art. Fritz Boehle created this iron statue in Frankfurt. It depicts Charlemagne and originally belonged to a plan for a monument fountain beside a new Main Bridge. That Main Bridge project never took shape in Frankfurt. Boehle’s design later appeared as an iron casting near the Binding Brewery administration building. The statue later reached its present place at Wendelsplatz. The former fountain basin holds earth and plants, because water no longer runs through it. Charlemagne remains the central figure of this public artwork. Boehle’s Frankfurt background included study at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut and a strong interest in people, animals, and horses. Albrecht Dürer influenced Boehle’s artistic education in Frankfurt. The sculpture also gave its name to Carolus, a strong beer associated with the Binding Brewery. Boehle’s legacy also appears in Sachsenhausen through a park and a street.
