Zeiler Käppele

A short climb above Zeil, on the steep top of the Kapellenberg, the Zeiler Käppele stands with two towers against the sky. It is a compact pilgrimage church, yet its façade borrows the rhythm of large cathedrals: a small sanctuary speaking the language of grand buildings. The hill falls away on three sides, and from the field altar the valley opens out below you, with the ridges of the Steigerwald to the north, the sweep toward the Rhön in the east and the gleam of the Maintal underneath.

Pilgrims made their way up here from the early eighteenth century, when a wooden cross marked the summit. In 1727 the town councillor Johann Wernhammer endowed a small Maria-Hilf chapel, and the church you see today took shape between 1894 and 1897 as a Marian shrine with its own Lourdes grotto. Further renovations followed through the twentieth century, keeping the twin-tower silhouette intact. Beneath the sacred stones lies an older story: the medieval castrum Cilanum, the vanished Zeil fortress, once crowned this hill, and excavations have brought up tower foundations and cellar vaults that confirm a large fortified complex stood here before devotion took over the summit.

You can drive almost to the door and park beside the church, or climb the steep fourteen-station Kreuzweg that leads up from the old town. Pilgrims, wedding parties and people who simply want the view all share the plateau. Before you move on, stop and watch the two towers against the sky: small, human in scale, and keeping watch over the valley as generations have done before you.
