Essbare Südstadt
Essbare Südstadt is a community garden at Bertha von Suttner Platz in Hanover, where former rose beds now hold organic vegetables, berries, and herbs. Shared planting brings food cultivation into an urban setting and connects neighbours with nature.
Hanover residents voiced interest in urban gardening in 2012, and local gardeners began reshaping the beds in 2014. Donated raised beds have produced sweet potatoes and other harvests, while Thursday gardening sessions bring the community together. The garden belongs to a Hanover network of 28 gardening communities, and Ökostadt supports the project with the city administration.
A historic kiosk, once a garden pavilion, provides a meeting place and tool shed beside the beds. It also shelters gardeners and supplies water when the rain barrel runs dry.
