Ponte di Rialto
A Ponte di Rialto atravessa o Grande Canal, em Veneza, no ponto mais estreito desta importante via de água. É a mais antiga das quatro pontes que ligam as duas margens e oferece vistas do canal em ambas as direcções. As rampas cobertas sobem até um pórtico central, com lojas alinhadas de cada lado.
A primeira travessia surgiu por volta de 1173 como uma ponte flutuante, chamada Ponte della Moneta. Em 1255, uma estrutura de madeira substituiu-a, ligando o mercado de Rialto ao centro político de San Marco. Depois de incêndios e desabamentos, Antonio da Ponte projectou o arco de pedra construído entre 1588 e 1591.
O arco actual mede cerca de 28 metros e permite a passagem de barcos, incluindo os autocarros aquáticos venezianos. Milhares de estacas de madeira sustentam os apoios sobre o solo aluvial e macio do canal. As lojas continuam a acompanhar o percurso, como acontecia já na antiga ponte de madeira.
