Ponte di Rialto
El Ponte di Rialto cruza el Gran Canal en Venecia, entre los barrios de San Marco y San Polo. Su arco de piedra sostiene dos rampas cubiertas, flanqueadas por tiendas, que ascienden hasta un pórtico central. Desde allí contemplas el canal en ambas direcciones, mientras las embarcaciones pasan bajo la estructura.
La primera conexión construida aquí fue un puente flotante del siglo XII, sustituido por uno de madera en 1255. Los incendios y varios derrumbes impulsaron la construcción actual, diseñada por Antonio da Ponte entre 1588 y 1591. Miles de pilotes de madera afirman sus apoyos sobre el terreno aluvial y distribuyen el peso del arco.
Durante siglos, este fue el único paso fijo sobre el Gran Canal y enlazó los centros comercial y político de Venecia. Las tiendas conservaron la función comercial de los primeros puentes y siguen formando una imagen característica. Bajo el arco, de veintiocho metros de luz, pasan también los autobuses acuáticos venecianos.
