Ponte di Rialto
Die Ponte di Rialto überspannt in Venedig den Canal Grande an seiner schmalsten Stelle. Der steinerne Bogen verbindet die Stadtteile San Marco und San Polo. Zwei überdachte Rampen führen zu einem zentralen Portikus, während Geschäfte beide Seiten säumen.
Eine schwimmende Pontonbrücke entstand hier um 1173, bevor 1255 eine Holzbrücke folgte. Nach mehreren Bränden und Einstürzen begann Antonio da Ponte 1588 mit dem heutigen Steinbau. Die Arbeiten endeten 1591, nachdem Tausende Holzpfähle in den weichen Boden getrieben worden waren. Bis ins 19. Jahrhundert blieb dieser Übergang die einzige feste Verbindung über den Canal Grande. Dadurch verband er das Handelszentrum Rialto mit dem politischen Zentrum San Marco.
Unter dem Bogen fahren Boote und die Wasserbusse Venedigs hindurch. Vom Portikus schaust du den Canal Grande in beide Richtungen entlang. Shakespeare lässt Shylock in Der Kaufmann von Venedig über den Rialto sprechen.
