Atlantenbrunnen

Atlantenbrunnen is a fountain at the end of Platzgasse in Ulm, where the medieval old town gives way to newer streets. Preserved historic buildings stand beside commercial and residential buildings from around 1900, built after the old city wall was removed.

Nearby, Büchsenstadel dates from 1485 and now serves as a youth centre, while the Museum für Brotkultur occupies the former Salzstadel. Remains of the medieval fortifications include Ulm’s distinctive Grabenhäuschen, small houses built into the old moat. A kiosk beside the fountain has served newspapers, drinks, cigarettes and lottery tickets for more than two decades, becoming a meeting point for judges, lawyers, politicians and workers alike.

Peter Eilert ran the kiosk for 21 years before handing it to Abbas Toloui Fard, a former taxi driver. Together, the fountain, kiosk and historic surroundings show Ulm’s past meeting its everyday present.
