Schwanentor

Schwanentor stands beside the Main in Würzburg, where a former city gate meets a modern commercial building. The Renaissance portal preserves part of the medieval route that brought goods from the river into the old town.

The Würzburg council ordered its reconstruction in 1584, replacing an older gate and adding rusticated limestone pilasters. An inn called Zum Schwan gave the gate its later name during the seventeenth century. War damage destroyed the surrounding hotel area in 1945, leaving the portal, stair-tower remains and gate passage behind. During redevelopment in 1977 and 1978, these fragments became part of the new structure.

On the riverside, the surviving portal now frames a stairway in front of the building. Bricked-up windows, door frames and a polygonal stair tower remain visible towards Büttnerstraße. A sealed well casing from the sixteenth or seventeenth century adds another trace of Würzburg’s earlier streetscape.
