St. Leonhard

St. Leonhard is a small hospital chapel whose compact Baroque hall preserves an intimate architectural character. Its rectangular choir feels almost hidden within the hospital wing. The nave retains older proportions, while the later choir opens through round arches onto covered walkways. Those covered walkways served patients and hospital visitors. A document records the chapel in 1426, and its hospital connection probably included use as a leper chapel around 1500. Its Baroque interior took shape in 1722. Stucco, frescoes and a high altar painting by Franz Martin Kuen shape the room’s historical focus. The painting shows St. Leonhard among the sick, pilgrims and animals. A restored Madonna and Child from about 1730 stands beneath the gallery. The hospital expansion removed the medieval tower and old choir, adding a late-Classical choir and roof turret. Baroque bells occupy the small roof turret. A late twentieth-century restoration preceded an organ installed behind a Neo-Baroque prospect in 2000. The chapel remains a quiet place for patients and visitors, while a large nativity scene fills it from Advent to Candlemas.
