Schleifmühle
Schleifmühle stands in Schwerin, Germany, beside the Schlossgarten and within the city’s residence ensemble. Its undershot water wheel powered stone processing.
Built around 1705 as a bark mill, the building became a grist mill in 1718 before changing purpose again. A flood stopped work in 1737. A replacement mill followed in 1747, adding expanded milling equipment and a small workshop for grinding stone. By 1755, it operated fully as a grinding mill. Production ended in 1904 after structural problems, and later uses included storage and a transformer station.
Reconstruction between 1983 and 1985 restored historical stoneworking technology and established the museum. A water wheel installed in 2000 measures about 4.5 metres across. Outside, a stone saw from around 1920 shows another stage in the development of this craft. Exhibitions cover the mill’s history and stone products, while the former grinder’s home hosts photography displays.
