St. Mary's Church
Marienkirche stands in Germany, counted among the important Gothic churches of Württemberg. The town's citizens raised it as the first church within the town walls. Its tower sets the silhouette: a square base turns octagonal, and a golden angel with a flag and cross holds the summit. That figure is usually read as the Archangel Gabriel.
Matthäus Alber preached here from 1521 to 1548 and spread Martin Luther's ideas through the surrounding region. Four statues in the choir show that story: Philipp Melanchthon and Alber on one side, Martin Luther and the mayor Joss Weiß on the other. A town fire in 1726 destroyed nearly the entire interior. Two pieces came through the flames: the late Gothic Holy Sepulchre and the baptismal font from 1499. A neo-Gothic restoration between 1893 and 1901 shaped the church you see today. It has counted among Germany's national cultural monuments since 1988. The sacristy beside the choir is the oldest part still standing, and its stone vault probably shielded it from the fire. Its walls carry scenes from the life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and her wheel appears among them.
Music fills the church too: the organ holds 3,813 pipes within its historic case. Temperature swings change how individual pipes vibrate and can bend their pitch, so every performance is a challenge for the organist. The most surprising detail waits in the choir. A cross by Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen hangs above the altar. Stand on the rosette in the floor, look through its two angels, and Jesus in a red robe appears behind them. The artist planned that sightline deliberately, to suggest Christ's ascent into heaven.
