Wasserturm

The Wasserturm stands in Leipzig as a late-nineteenth-century water tower built for surrounding buildings. Construction of the tower finished in Leipzig during 1898. Brickwork and its overall form bring architectural attention to a building designed for utility. From outside, its scale reflects the infrastructure required by a growing city.

An elevated tank held up to 1,200 cubic metres, creating pressure as gravity carried water through pipes. That reserve supplied drinking water to nearby buildings. The tower served Leipzig’s water supply until the middle of the 1960s. Improved technology and new supply systems then made its original role unnecessary.

The structure remains a visible piece of Leipzig’s industrial heritage. Its essential principle was simple: pumps raised water, and gravity moved it onwards.
