Marktplatz

Marktplatz occupies the heart of Heidelberg’s Altstadt, bordered by Hauptstrasse, Heiliggeiststrasse, the Town Hall and the Church of the Holy Spirit. Since medieval times, markets have filled this public square with local produce, flowers and everyday goods.

The Gothic church rises along the western side, while the baroque Town Hall marks the eastern end. At the centre, the Herkulesbrunnen dates from 1706 to 1709 and commemorates Heidelberg’s rebuilding after two devastating wars. Hercules represents the strength and determination behind that recovery. Public trials and executions also took place here, including those of Johann Sylvan in 1572 and Hölzerlips and Mannefriedrich in 1812.

Cars once occupied the space, but pedestrians have had priority since the late 1970s. Historic houses, cafés and shops now frame gatherings, concerts and seasonal markets. During winter, wooden huts sell treats, crafts and gifts around the square. After the first Advent Sunday, pink lighting marks Pink Monday beside the Town Hall balconies. The Herkules statue remains the detail that holds everything together, recalling when its fountain supplied Heidelberg residents with fresh water.
