Fischkeller

Fischkeller lies beneath Germany’s main market, where a vaulted stone cellar once held live fish beside the busy square. Cool walls and low arches surround the underground space. Water from the Leina canal once ran through the cellar, keeping freshly caught fish alive before market trading above.

Damp air and thick masonry kept the catch cool. Earth and city life later hid the entrance. Archaeological work uncovered a second access, allowing more light into passages that had disappeared beneath the market. Guided tours follow the restored vaults and connect the cellar with medieval work, water management, and market life.

Smooth stones remain beneath your feet. The strongest image is the Leina canal flowing through a cool room while fish waited below the trading square.
