Denkmal Füssen-Numata
The Denkmal Füssen-Numata stands in Füssen, an Allgäu town at the edge of the Alps. The wider setting brings together the River Lech, an old town and a history reaching back to Roman times. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau lie nearby, adding the region’s best-known castles to its Alpine backdrop.
The monument marks Füssen’s partnership with Numata, a city in Japan, and makes their continuing friendship visible in the town. Such city partnerships encourage cultural exchange, mutual understanding and cooperation in education or economic life. Here, that connection reaches beyond official visits and ceremonies to student exchanges, cultural events and shared traditions. Füssen maintains similar links with Palestrina in Italy, Helen in the United States and Bardu in Norway.
Numata brings its own landscape into this relationship, including the Fukiware Falls, sometimes compared with Niagara Falls. As you pause here, you can picture that Japanese scenery alongside Füssen’s river and mountains. The friendship becomes tangible through residents exchanging visits, stories and traditions across the distance between Germany and Japan.
