Sankt Marien

Sankt Marien, also called Marienkirche, is a Lutheran parish church in central Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. Romanesque construction began between 1170 and 1200 beside the medieval Hellweg, the route linking Dortmund with other free imperial towns. A Gothic choir joined the building around 1350, later providing a model for Reinoldikirche across the street.

Medieval art gives the interior its strongest focus: Conrad von Soest’s Marienaltar from 1420 presents scenes from Mary’s life, while the Berswordtaltar dates from 1385. The church suffered severe damage during the Second World War, but both altarpieces survived after evacuation to Cappenberg Castle. Reconstruction finished in 1959, followed by restored, subdued-colour windows designed by Johannes Schreiter in 1972.

High above the nave, the reconstructed swallow’s-nest organ adds a distinctive architectural detail. Sacred-music concerts now share the space with Lutheran worship, connecting Dortmund’s medieval heritage with its cultural life.
