Vagttårnet

Vagttårnet is a narrow, round guard tower on the edge of Copenhagen’s Carlsberg district. Red brick, glazed tiles and a granite base give the 1905 building a sturdy profile beside the changing neighbourhood.

Architect Hack Kampmann designed it as an outer guard post for the Carlsberg Brewery and Carl Jacobsen’s private residence. The gatekeeper controlled access to both properties and monitored traffic on Ny Carlsberg Vej, where the brewery once stood. Surplus yeast was sold here to private customers until 1988, earning the tower its nickname, “Yeast Tower.”

Inside, granite continues through the structure, including a striking spiral staircase fitted into the narrow, circular space. Curved windows look towards Valby Langgade on one side and newer Carlsberg buildings on the other, showing how industrial Copenhagen meets the modern city. The protected tower sometimes opens during events, when visitors can see its construction and details at close range.
