Bo-Kaap view
Bo-Kaap view presents Bo-Kaap, a Cape Town neighbourhood known for brightly painted houses and Cape Malay heritage. Flat-roofed homes show Georgian and Cape Dutch influences.
The Cape Malay community traces its roots to enslaved people brought from Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar, and India. Islamic faith and cultural practices remain central to its heritage.
The Bo-Kaap Museum occupies the area’s oldest building, displaying handcrafted furniture, photographs, and traditions such as the Kaapse Klopse. The museum also presents Bo-Kaap’s local history.
Spice shops, including Atlas Trading, support Cape Malay cooking with ingredients for dishes such as samoosas, koesisters, and Cape Malay curry. Community hospitality often includes extra food for unexpected guests.
The neighbourhood’s streets preserve a distinctive layout, while colourful façades express cultural identity and resilience. Bo-Kaap also forms part of South Africa’s apartheid history.
Gentrification threatens changes to this historic neighbourhood, yet its people and traditions continue shaping Bo-Kaap’s community spirit.
