Bo-Kaap view
Bo-Kaap view hoort bij Bo-Kaap, een kleurrijke wijk in Kaapstad met huizen in uiteenlopende felle kleuren. De wijk is verbonden met de Kaapse Maleise gemeenschap. Die gemeenschap bewaart islamitische tradities, eigen gerechten en een geschiedenis die teruggaat tot de zeventiende eeuw. De Nederlandse Oost-Indische Compagnie bracht voorouders uit Maleisië, Indonesië, Madagaskar en India als slaven naar Zuid-Afrika. De huizen tonen Georgische en Kaaps-Hollandse kenmerken. Vlakke daken en beschilderde gevels geven Bo-Kaap een herkenbare architectuur, waarin culturele identiteit en historische herinnering samenkomen.
Het Bo-Kaap Museum is gevestigd in het oudste gebouw van de buurt. Daar zie je handgemaakte meubels en foto’s over gebruiken zoals Kaapse Klopse, een carnaval met wortels in de slavernij. Specerijwinkels zoals Atlas Trading horen bij de keuken van de wijk. De keuken omvat samoesa’s, koesisters en Kaapse curry, met smaken uit verschillende herkomstgebieden van de gemeenschap. Gastvrijheid vormt een belangrijk onderdeel van het gemeenschapsleven. Bo-Kaap speelt ook een rol in de geschiedenis van de apartheid in Zuid-Afrika. Gentrificatie vormt een uitdaging voor het historische karakter en de samenhang van deze wijk.
