Zeughaus
Zeughaus stands in Augsburg as a monumental building from 1602 to 1607, designed by Elias Holl. Its façade, created by Joseph Heintz, shows the transition between Renaissance and Baroque architecture, known as Mannerism.
Above the eastern main portal, a bronze group shows the archangel Michael fighting Satan. Hans Reichle designed the sculpture, while Wolfgang Neidhardt cast the figures. Earlier buildings occupied the site as a foundry and arsenal, before fires led Augsburg to commission this larger structure. The arsenal could accommodate up to 3,000 soldiers and later became a fire station, rescue service base, and cultural centre.
Today, large halls host exhibitions, seminars, celebrations, and community events, while the Toskanische Säulenhalle presents changing displays. The building also houses the Sing- und Musikschule Mozartstadt Augsburg, Zeughaus Stuben, and a beer garden beneath chestnut trees. During winter, the courtyard provides a setting for events such as Augsburg’s Christmas market.
