Werkbundsiedlung
The Werkbundsiedlung is a housing estate in Vienna's Hietzing district, opened as a model settlement for modern living. Josef Frank led its artistic direction from the outset.
Architects from Austria and abroad designed its family houses, while Frank planned the estate's overall spatial arrangement. László Gábor developed the colour scheme for the settlement. The compact homes use functional details, efficient layouts and carefully planned views to create a sense of spaciousness. The estate belongs to Vienna's story of social housing.
Inspired by the Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart, it records the interwar ambitions of modern architecture and urban planning. The settlement has monument protection and a protected architectural zone. War damage, postwar rebuilding and later restoration have left original houses alongside a building by Roland Rainer. A small museum stands beside one house. The Rietveld House also forms part of the site's architectural record, restored to its original condition by Tillner and Willinger. The estate received the European Heritage Label.
