Oratorio di San Ludovico
The Oratorio di San Ludovico is a small sixteenth-century church in Venice’s Dorsoduro district. Its modest scale reflects an original charitable home for elderly men without wives or children.
Since 1996, the space has hosted art exhibitions and cultural events under Nuova Icona’s management. Contemporary installations and performances have included works by On Kawara, Nástio Mosquito and Jinny Yu. During Kawara’s One Million Years (Reading), volunteers read dates reaching one million years into the past and future. The spoken readings connected contemporary art with the building’s ecclesiastical setting and history of gathering.
The venue also belongs to the San Trovaso–Zattere–IUAV art walk through Dorsoduro. Jinny Yu’s installation combined visual art and sound while exploring migration and human experience. The Venice Biennale has used this intimate church for installations and performances, bringing international contemporary art into an historic setting.
