Catalina Homar

Catalina Homar stands in this municipal garden as a fired, partly painted refractory-clay bust on rough stone. Two plaques explain Catalina Homar’s life and work.

Born in 1869, she rose from day labourer to administrator of the S’estaca estate under Archduke Ludwig Salvator. The archduke supported her education in reading and writing. As administrator, Catalina Homar improved cultivation, extended seasonal employment, and secured higher wages and rainy-day pay for workers. Her malvasía and moscatel wines reached international exhibitions.

The bust connects her practical reforms, workers’ rights, and wine production with the land she helped shape. A local sculptor shaped its warm, tactile surface. A named trail nearby crosses olive groves, holm oak, and restored rural features before returning along an old mountain track. The route includes a lime oven and snow pit. Catalina Homar also travelled with the archduke to learn techniques and later received a memorial book after her death. The archduke later published a memorial book after her death.
