Podul Decebal

Podul Decebal crosses the Bega Canal in Timișoara, linking the Fabric district with Traian Square. Reinforced concrete beams define its low profile.

Mihailich Gyözö designed the bridge, with Körössy Albert serving as architect. Construction finished in the early twentieth century. Seven jointed beams create three spans, with cantilevers carrying the wide central opening. Buried side spans replaced conventional abutments and reduced construction costs. The structure became a notable example of local engineering.

Earlier, a wooden bridge crossed the Canalul Plutăritului, where logs once floated downstream. Later names included Liget Úti Híd, Parkstraßenbrücke, and Podul Neptun. Demonstrators gathered here during the December 1989 Revolution, while the nearby Pietà sculpture commemorates Leontina Bânciu. In the 1950s and 1960s, a local man called Mutu dived from the bridge into the Bega Canal. Children and adults watched from the lively banks, where swimming, sport, and everyday neighbourhood life continued around the water.
