Schlossgarten
Schlossgarten in Schwerin is a twenty-five-hectare baroque garden directly south of Schwerin Castle. A cross canal mirrors the castle from the centre of the formal grounds. Pavilions, arbours, water features, a large grotto, and a lawn cascade complete the designed landscape.
The present layout began in 1748, when Duke Christian Ludwig II commissioned French architect Jean Laurent Legeay. Kitchen gardens occupied the site in the sixteenth century. A short-lived French-style pleasure garden followed in 1672, but damp soil and poor maintenance ended that phase. Peter Joseph Lenné expanded the grounds from 1840 to 1852. He added English landscape elements without removing the baroque structure.
Burggarten adds terraces, water features, and a grotto shaped by Italian Renaissance influences. The oval Hippodrom, enclosed by trees, served events and tournaments. Copies replaced Balthasar Permoser’s original baroque sculptures for conservation reasons. The wooden Jugendtempel, a classical round temple, was rebuilt in 2014 after earlier destruction.
