Brīvības piemineklis
Brīvības piemineklis rises in central Riga as a 42-metre memorial to soldiers killed during Latvia’s War of Independence. Granite, travertine and copper form tapering, four-sided shapes above a round platform and winding staircase. At the summit, a nine-metre copper figure of Liberty raises three gilded stars above her head. The stars represent Vidzeme, Latgale and Courland, Latvia’s three historical regions.
Kārlis Zāle designed the monument after competitions, and private donations funded its construction between 1931 and 1935. Thirteen sculptural groups and bas-reliefs portray Latvian culture, historical struggles and figures including Lāčplēsis and Vaidelotis. During Soviet rule, the site remained a symbol of independence, while a 1987 flower-laying gathering helped spark renewed national independence. Restoration completed in 2001 cleaned and re-gilded Liberty and the stars, then repaired and sealed the stone.
The pedestrian plaza also places you beside a flower garden, fountain, National Opera House and Laima clock. Around the base, “Work” brings together a fisherman, craftsman and farmer, while “Chain breakers” shows men straining against their bonds.
