Kisha e Shën Premtës
Kisha e Shën Premtës stands in Prizren on a sacred site used since antiquity. Roman remains include an altar and a stone slab carved with a laurel wreath.
Older building materials preserve traces of Roman and Byzantine history within the structure. The present building rose in the early fourteenth century over an eleventh-century Byzantine basilica.
Five domes, five naves, monumental exterior inscriptions, and a Byzantine-style bell tower shape its late Byzantine architecture. Michael and Eutychios Astrapas painted the frescoes, including scenes of Orthodox councils.
Ottoman rule later transformed the church into Fatih Cami, adding a minaret that was removed in the twentieth century. A Persian verse by Hafez appears above one fresco in Arabic script.
Damage during the unrest of 2004 led to further restoration, including work on the facade and churchyard. The building belongs to UNESCO’s Medieval Monuments in Kosovo and remains endangered heritage.
