Hauptpostamt

Hauptpostamt stands in downtown Potsdam as a protected monument and a surviving example of neobaroque postal architecture. The building served as the city's main post office and Oberpostdirektion administrative unit.

Known originally as Neue Post, it was completed at the start of the twentieth century under Ernst Hake's direction. Its three-storey sandstone facade faces the city canal. The Technical Construction Office of the Imperial Post Office created a classical columned portico and a large inner courtyard. Workers drove twelve-metre piles into swampy ground before laying a thick concrete slab. Side towers and the dome above the main entrance disappeared in 1936, changing the building's original silhouette.

Wartime bombing heavily damaged the complex in 1945. Restoration during the early 1950s returned Hauptpostamt to postal use after extensive destruction. Its neobaroque decoration recalls Potsdam's late-eighteenth-century architectural language, despite the lost domes and other details. The facade's columns give the canal elevation a formal, monumental presence. This spot connects postal history, engineering and Potsdam's urban architecture in one central building.
