Musée d'art moderne et d'art contemporain
The Musée d'art moderne et d'art contemporain stands in Nice as a modern and contemporary art museum beside the Paillon. Yves Bayard and Henri Vidal shaped its square, neoclassical-inspired building with white Carrara marble and a tetrapod arch spanning the waterway. About 4,500 square metres contain ten exhibition rooms, while the Promenade des Arts links the museum with a nearby theatre.
More than 1,400 works by around 350 artists trace avant-garde movements from the late 1950s onward. European New Realism meets American Pop Art, the School of Nice, Fluxus, Arte Povera, Supports/Surfaces, minimalism and colour-field painting. A dedicated room presents around twenty works by Yves Klein, and Niki de Saint Phalle contributed 170 works to the collection in 2001.
The museum opened on 21 June 1990 and has hosted more than 213 temporary exhibitions. Its accessible entrance sits on the Esplanade Niki de Saint Phalle, overlooking Place Yves Klein, while the permanent collections occupy the second and third floors.
