Bibliothèque Raoul Mille
Bibliothèque Raoul Mille stands in Nice’s former Gare du Sud railway station, where a historic transport hub now welcomes readers. Its neoclassical facade combines ceramic tiles, painted decoration, and carved stonework, while the preserved train shed recalls Gustave Eiffel’s design for the Paris Exposition Universelle.
Four floors provide about 1,500 square metres for culture, leisure, and learning. The former waiting hall contains a multimedia room with internet access, digital tablets, and a meeting room, while the first floor offers board games and wooden games for all ages. A 400-square-metre reading room holds thousands of books, DVDs, and periodicals, alongside spaces for creative writing, poetry, and digital literacy workshops.
The transformation followed the station’s closure in 1991 and its protection as a historic monument, with the library opening in 2014. Six distinct areas now connect the building’s railway history with everyday community life in the Libération Malausséna district. Wheelchair-accessible spaces preserve the feeling of travel, carrying visitors from a former platform into books, imagination, and shared activities.
