Avant-poste de Pont-Saint-Louis

The Avant-poste de Pont-Saint-Louis is a compact military casemate beside the coastal road at Menton, just metres from the French-Italian border. Built into a cliff bend between 1930 and August 1932, it formed part of the Alpine Maginot Line and controlled the main route between the two countries.

A seven-metre steel barrier once blocked the road, while six buried artillery shells formed an anti-tank minefield behind it. Two firing openings accommodated a light machine gun and either two heavy machine guns or a 37-millimetre anti-tank gun, with a grenade chute completing the compact defence. Inside, two rooms held air filtration, hand-operated ventilation, 100 litres of drinking water and ammunition for several days of independent action. Nine soldiers maintained the post, linked by telephone and radio to Cap-Martin, five kilometres west.

When Italy attacked in June 1940, the crew detonated a road charge containing one tonne of explosives, leaving a crater and damaging communications. Machine-gun fire kept the road closed until the armistice on 25 June, although Italian forces reached Menton through the hills and along the railway. The casemate is now closed to organised visits, and a landslide has made its reinforced steel door difficult to operate.
