Martha Rosenbaum
The Stolpersteine for Martha Rosenbaum lie in Memmingen, embedded in the pavement before the Rosenbaums’ former villa. These small brass plaques commemorate people persecuted under the Nazi regime.
Martha, born in Frankfurt in 1895, and Benno, born in Memmingen in 1883, ran a cheese business there. Benno chaired Memmingen’s Jewish community in 1932. After Kristallnacht in 1938, the SS vandalised their home and confiscated their belongings. The couple escaped to South America in 1941, while Benno died by suicide in 1944.
Memmingen now has 115 Stolpersteine recalling Jewish residents persecuted by Nazi terror. The memorial stones for Martha and Benno were laid in December 2019. Their placement marked the project’s 75,000th stone across Europe.
