St. Ignaz
St. Ignaz stands in Mainz as a classicist hall church built between 1763 and 1775 under architect Johann Peter Jäger. Its sandstone façade combines Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns, drawing inspiration from Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Paris. Inside, a cross-shaped plan and vaulted ceiling mark the shift from Baroque forms toward classicism.
Johann Valentin Thoman designed the ceiling, where paintings by Johann Baptist Enderle depict scenes from the life of Ignatius of Antioch. The artworks were repainted in the early twentieth century and restored in the 1950s. Beneath the choir, a crypt preserves 198 of 261 oven graves, including craftsmen who helped build the church.
Above the main entrance, a classicist organ case holds an instrument with 34 stops, two manuals, and a pedal, restored to its original state in 2019. A former cemetery surrounds the church, with a copy of a 1519 Crucifixion group by Mainz sculptor Hans Backoffen.
