Gonsenheimer Tor

Gonsenheimer Tor is a former fortress gate in Mainz’s Hartenberg-Münchfeld district, forming part of Festung Mainz. The gate stood within Mainz’s defensive Rheingau Wall. Built at the wall’s highest point, it connected Mainz with Gonsenheim and western flood-safe roads. The road Am Fort Gonsenheim passed through it. Separate passages served vehicles and pedestrians, while casemates with barrel vaults strengthened both sides of the entrance. A steel bridge crossed the trench before the gate. Sandstone framing, rusticated cornerstones, lintel arches, and profiled cornices gave the practical structure crafted detail. Improved artillery eventually made the fortress gate obsolete. Demolition removed its upper section, while workers filled and levelled the lower remains during the dismantling of Mainz fortifications. Construction work rediscovered those lower remains in 2003. The restored structure stands about forty metres from its original position, with a wall plaque explaining its history. The field side held firing openings above the parallel trench. A massive earth covering shielded the gate from artillery fire within the Rheingau Wall.
