Grottenbahn

Grottenbahn occupies an old fortification tower in Linz’s Maximilian defensive ring, creating a fairy-tale world underground. A dragon-shaped electric train called Lenzibald carries you around an 83-metre circular track. Two laps illuminate alternating sides of the tunnel, revealing dwarf scenes filled with work, adventures and everyday life.

Built in 1906, the attraction reopened in 1948 after wartime bombing and now combines local history with imaginative displays. The original ride used a dragon-headed motor car, while later changes introduced colourful lighting, sound effects and a fire-breathing dragon. The basement contains life-sized fairy-tale scenes and a detailed brick model of Linz’s Hauptplatz, showing the square around 1900.

The model uses a one-to-seven scale, with figures watching from windows, including the artist’s self-portrait. A final brightly lit circuit reveals the grotto in full, making every dwarf, alley and painted detail visible.
