Wasserturm Leipzig-Möckern

Wasserturm Leipzig-Möckern is a historic waterworks complex in Leipzig, with two yellow-brick towers and a former boiler house between them. The southern tower rises about 44 metres and carries sandstone details around its base and windows.

Adolf Thiem designed the southern tower in 1896, with a riveted steel tank holding 350 cubic metres of water. The northern tower followed in 1903, holding 375 cubic metres and serving nearby barracks and a provisions office, including their fire protection needs. Both towers left service in 1980 after Leipzig modernised and centralised its water supply, and they now form part of the city’s protected industrial heritage.

Green-glazed brick bands add colour to the lower shaft of the northern tower. Its tank and roof were removed in 1995, while the southern tower received artificial slate during renovation in 1997.
