Markt
Markt occupies about one hectare in Leipzig’s city centre, forming an almost rectangular pedestrian square. Seven inner-city streets lead here, making the granite-paved space a natural meeting point.
Diamond-patterned paving frames Leipzig’s coat of arms in coloured stones at the centre. The Old Town Hall, built in the sixteenth century, stands along the eastern side. Underground, Leipzig Markt station connects the square with places across the region. Rochlitz porphyry clads a restored staircase from the former underground exhibition hall, while a bronze relief by Frank Ruddigkeit presents scenes from the square’s history.
Public life has gathered here through markets, trade fairs, festivals and demonstrations. Weekly stalls bring fresh food, flowers and plants, while the Leipzig Christmas Market, Easter Market and Bachfest Leipzig fill the surroundings with activity. The listed paving preserves a detail you can see beneath every footstep.
