Apelstein 22
Apelstein 22 stands in Leipzig as a granite memorial to the Battle of Leipzig, fought in October 1813. At Lindenau, Austrian General Ignaz Gyulai commanded the Third Austrian Corps, numbering about 17,000 soldiers.
The present 1.9-metre stone was erected in 1897 as a copy of a sandstone monument placed by Theodor Apel in 1862. It belongs to a network of 50 Apelsteine marking positions held by French and allied forces across Leipzig and its surrounding towns. The east side records the fighting at Lindenau on 16 October 1813, while the west side names Gyulai, his corps and the figure 17,000.
The stone’s inscription makes the location tangible: “Gefecht bei Lindenau 16 October 1813.” Its granite surface replaced the original sandstone, which later stood in the garden of the Kuhthurm.
