Globus
Globus is a shell-limestone sculpture by Ursula Hensel-Krüger, standing before Kiel’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce. It rises about 2.8 metres.
Created in 1958, the work reflects trade and craftsmanship through flowing, transparent forms. A globe rests on three legs. Two gently rising semicircular walls encircle it, interlocking slightly and carrying subtle figurative reliefs on their outer surfaces.
The setting brings together a sculptural building by Kauffmann Theilig & Partner and an older structure by Wilhelm Neveling. Kiel’s maritime heritage surrounds this meeting of global openness, skilled work and contrasting architecture. Hensel-Krüger designed the monument away from the figurative style common during its period.
