Markthalle
Markthalle stands opposite Hanover’s Old Town Hall, between Lein, Markt and Karmarsch streets. The wheelchair-accessible interior offers vegetables, wine, sausage, meat, baked goods, fish and fruit. Warm German and international meals make the space a meeting place for cappuccino or prosecco.
The present building opened in 1954 after wartime destruction erased the earlier hall. Its foundations and cellars remain partly visible beneath the post-war structure, completed in 1955. The original 1892 hall used iron, glass and brick, and became the German Empire’s largest steel-and-glass building. Since 1975, the underground Markthalle/Landtag station has connected the market with Hanover’s Stadtbahn.
Karoline Duhnsen, known as Oma Duhnsen, sold meat and sausage there for more than fifty years. A monument shows her with a basket and basket carrier beside the main entrance.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Hanover. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
