Ilka Feis geb. Hess
Ilka Feis geb. Hess is a Stolperstein in Hamburg, commemorating a woman born there on 17 September 1896. The memorial identifies a Jewish resident whose life ended in the Holocaust. Her family moved between Hamburg addresses before settling in a villa in Winterhude with her parents, Julius and Gertrud Hess. Ilka was the youngest child in the Hess family.
She married banker Albert Feis in 1925, and their marriage brought two daughters into the family. Albert’s bank later faced financial difficulties during the family’s attempted emigration. Persecution under the Nazi regime intensified because of their Jewish heritage. After the family attempted to emigrate to South America, Albert reached Brazil in 1939. Their two daughters were sent to England. Ilka could not leave Germany, however, and authorities arrested her in 1941. Deportation took her to the Łódź Ghetto. She was murdered there, and the Stolperstein preserves her name in Hamburg.
