Parfumerie Fragonard

Parfumerie Fragonard stands in Grasse, France, inside an eighteenth-century building that began as a tannery. The factory became a perfume site in the early twentieth century and has housed Fragonard since 1926.

A guided visit follows perfume and cosmetics from raw materials to finished packaging. Copper stills, soap-making equipment, and the distillery show older methods, including steam distillation and hot and cold enfleurage for extracting floral scents. Stainless steel vats reveal how concentrates mix with alcohol, macerate for several weeks, and become clear through chilling and filtering. The soap workshop shapes French soap granules into scented bars, while the bottling room handles filling, labelling, and testing. A museum adds Egyptian blush spoons, medieval pomanders, Provençal furniture, and paintings connected with perfume history. Workshops use the perfumer’s organ, where rows of essence bottles help participants compose their own fragrance.

One memorable detail is the contrast between gilt aluminium estagnons for women’s perfumes and silver bottles for men’s fragrances. The renovated building also provides wheelchair access.
