Heiliggeistkirche
The Heiliggeistkirche stands in Frankfurt as part of the former Dominican Monastery and remains a Protestant church. Its name means Church of the Holy Spirit.
The Dominican community founded the monastery in the thirteenth century near Frankfurt’s medieval city wall. The church was consecrated in the thirteenth century.
During the fourteenth century, the monastery church became one of Frankfurt’s largest churches and a centre for scholars and preachers. Its library later became the largest in Frankfurt.
After secularisation, the complex served as a storehouse and military barracks before wartime destruction. Allied bombing destroyed the church during World War II.
Post-war reconstruction follows the old floor plan, while its architectural language reflects the period after the war. Only the late Gothic choir survives from the original structure.
Today, the church features a modern organ and serves as the seat of the Protestant Regional Association of Frankfurt. Wheelchair access supports entry to this architectural landmark.
