Antoniterkloster

Antoniterkloster in Frankfurt Höchst preserves a visible remnant of the former Antonite monastery and its architectural history. The monastery belonged to the Antonite order in Höchst. The order originally worked from Roßdorf near Hanau before moving to Höchst at the invitation of the Archbishop of Mainz. The move brought the Justinuskirche and former Albanuskloster into the monastery’s possession. The complex included residential and economic buildings, while the Justinuskirche gained a Gothic high choir during the monastery’s period in Höchst. Secularization later dissolved the monastery in Höchst.

One surviving building on Bolongarostraße retains a late Gothic core and Renaissance oriels added in the sixteenth century. The building serves as a residence and senior citizens’ centre. Another Bolongarostraße building shows the transition from late Gothic design to Renaissance timber framing through cross-bracing and counter-bracing. Its ground floor later gained commercial shops. The structure was largely reconstructed in 1994 to reflect its early sixteenth-century state. An apartment building later damaged part of the medieval complex. The former garden tithe barn was demolished, and a children’s daycare with a playground replaced it.
